Hear Luis Fernandes from Brazil

  • Director of the Rio de Janeiro State Government's Foundation for the Endowment of Scientific and Technological Research (FAPERJ)
  • Member of the Central Committee and the International Relations Commission of the Communist Party of Brazil (CPdoB)
  • Former leader of the National Union of Students (UNE) during the military regime
  • Professor of International Relations at the Federal University and at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro

Background: On October 27, 2002, the overwhelming majority of Brazilians awarded Workers Party (PT) candidate Luiz Inacio da Silva, known as Lula, a resounding victory in the nation's presidential elections.  Representatives of the Bush administration have clearly expressed their displeasure with the elections and Lula's opposition to the Free Trade of the Americas Agreement (FTAA).

Come hear Luis Fernandes' analysis of what Lula's victory represents, the alliance that made it possible, and his projections of what comes next!
