Communist Party, USA: Resolution on the Iraq War

Archive Struggles Peace and solidarity Iraq War

Whereas, the Bush Administration launched a war on Iraq for the purpose of controlling that nation’s oil and other resources, and to gain strategic geopolitical advantage over its rivals in Europe and Japan; and,

Whereas, the U.S. government is building the largest embassy in the world and 14 permanent military bases in Iraq with the aim of occupying and controlling that country for years to come; and,

Whereas, this mercenary, imperialist war of aggression was sold to the U.S. people and the world public on the basis of brazen lies, first as a bid to seize weapons of mass destruction (of which there were none) and then as a project to bring democracy (best typified, perhaps, by the torture chambers at Abu Ghraib prison!); and,

Whereas, over 1,700 U.S. troops have been killed in this war, and many tens of thousands more have been seriously injured; and,

Whereas, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed or wounded in this war, and their economy—including what used to be the best educational system and health system in the Middle East—has been shattered; and,

Whereas, Halliburton, Bechtel and other corporations linked to the military-industrial complex have obtained obscene profits from this war; and,

Whereas, the cost of waging this war and occupation has led to the starving of badly needed social and education programs in the U.S.;

Therefore be it resolved, that the Communist Party, USA calls for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq; and,

Be it further resolved, that reparations be paid to the Iraqi people from the U.S. to restore their economy to its pre-war state and as restitution for the injuries and suffering inflicted upon them; and,

Be it further resolved, that such reparations come from the profits of Halliburton, Bechtel and other war profiteers in the first place; and,

Be it further resolved, that the responsible officials in the U.S. government, starting with President George W. Bush, be prosecuted for war crimes before an international tribunal; and,

Be it further resolved, that the content of this resolution be communicated to the mass media.

Adopted by the 28th National Convention of the Communist Party, USA, Chicago, IL; July 1-3, 2005.
