On October 15th1842 Karl Marx became editor of Rheinische Zeitung. The paper was suppressed by the Prussian state a year later and was reestablished as the Neue Rheinische Zeitung (“New Rhenish Newspaper”). Neue Rheinische Zeitung ws published on behalf of the Communist League. It was while working as journalist that Marx first became acquainted with French socialist ideas. During this period he also touched for the first time on economic issues: in this case of theft of wood by peasants. Engles said journalism led Marx “from pure politics to economic relationships and so to socialism.”
