CHICAGO – The broad shoulders of Chicago were weighted with grief following the terrorist bombings in New York and Washington that killed thousands. On Friday, during the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, the city literally stopped as events were held everywhere.
Over 25,000 people from every walk of life filled the downtown streets for blocks in every direction. It was one of the largest remembrances nationally to pay respects for the dead and wounded and show solidarity against the terrorist acts.
Most offices simply closed their doors as tearful employees streamed from buildings and embraced each other.
During the moment of silence the only sounds heard were the whistling wind, the pealing of a lone church bell and the sobs of grieving Chicagoans.
