This year marks the centennial of the Communist Party. From days of organizing the sweatshops in textile in the 20’s to the founding of CIO and the mass production industries, to the fight against the right-wing George Meany leadership of the AFL-CIO the Communist Party has been involved in the labor movement. The Steeworkers Union, the UAW, UE and many others owe in large part their existence to communist activists.
But the CPUSA did not view labor narrowly and viewed fighting against racism, war and social justice as part and parcel of the working-class’ call. This included joining the International Brigades to defend democracy in Spain, battling segregation in the Jim Crow South, to fighting against war in Vietnam, apartheid in South Africa and for a Palestinian homeland. Be it the GOP Southern Strategy or Bill Clinton neoliberalism, the CP fought for labor rights. This webinar explores this history.
