On April 3 Senate Democrats announced they would filibuster Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the U.S. Supreme Court. Millions of people and the entire breadth of the people’s movement back them.

A filibuster will either force the Republicans to halt the nomination, or as is now likely, end the filibuster rules (requiring at least 60 votes to end debate). This would allow them to ram the nomination through with a simple majority.
Democrats argue that a U.S Supreme Court justice should have overwhelming support since they are appointed for life.
The protestations by GOP leadership and their threat to “Go Nuclear” ring hollow. They successfully obstructed President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland that would have tipped the balance of the court in a liberal direction.

During the Senate Judiciary hearings Gorsuch came across as smug, contemptible, arrogant and dogmatic. He showed himself is an elitist, anti-working class right-winger.
Based on record, NPR Supreme Court correspondent Nina Totenberg said Gorsuch would become the 2nd most reactionary justice after Clarence Thomas. Gorsuch will move the court in a reactionary direction for decades to come.
Right wing outfits like the Heritage Foundation and Federalist Society are pushing Gorsuch.

Gorsuch has an “originalist” judicial philosophy; the belief law should be interpreted precisely as the founders wrote the Constitution. It would ignore context and changes in society, culture and public opinion.
This makes Gorsuch among the most conservative and reactionary thinkers of Constitutional law.
Throughout his judicial career, Gorsuch has written decisions that restrict access to abortion, define corporations as “people” and allow them to deny access to birth control for their employees. He has denied transgender rights and repeatedly ruled against disabled students seeking a public education.
The AFL-CIO notes, “(Gorsuch) routinely rules against workers in health and safety cases; he regularly rejects the claims of employees seeking relief from discrimination in the workplace; and he frequently denies workers’ efforts to secure earned wage and benefits.
“Gorsuch ruled that for-profit corporations have the right to religious freedom, and can invoke these rights to deprive their female employees health insurance coverage for contraception.”
Gorsuch has condoned the use of water boarding and other torture techniques, methods opposed by the U.S. military and national security agencies.
