Fidel resigned, and obviously the corporate media is once again using this as an opportunity to spew all the same lies they always do about Cuba, like how its some crazy dictatorial society that Fidel rules with an iron fist and that the people hate it there and it will all crumble once Fidel dies.

Well I went to Cuba this summer with the Venceremos Brigade and heres what I learned; you could take any American and plop them down in Cuba, and it wont even take a day for them to see that everything the US media has fed us about Cuba is a lie.

For starters, there are tourists there from all over the world. The United States is the only country in the world that doesnt allow its citizens to travel to Cuba.

Secondly, the whole 2 weeks I was there I only saw Fidels image once. There is no bizarre cult of personality around Fidel like you had in some other communist countries. Instead you see images of Jose Marti, the leader of the Cuban independence movement in the late 1800s, and other famous people like Che. I even saw a statue of Abraham Lincoln down there, who they love for his role in freeing the slaves.

Furthermore, Cubans are organized as hell. Theyve got block clubs, youth groups, womens associations, writers collectives, you name it, theyve got it. Cubans on a grassroots level are organized completely independently of any state structures. These are the real forces behind Cuban society. They shape the national agenda.

So anyways, Cuba will go on.

Castro did an incredible job uniting Cuba around a vision for socialism. However, socialism has never been about any one individual, and a socialist Cuba has always been based on the people that build and maintain it everyday. Im excited about the sustained growth of socialism under new the new leadership of Castros replacement and the continued leadership of the Cuban Legislature,

The most important thing to know about Fidel Castros resignation is that life will continue on. The survival of Cuba does not depend now nor has it ever depended on one person. I think the future is bright for Cuba and there socialist project. Those that believe that this is precipitating some sort of crisis have no real understanding of how Cuba has matured over the years. Fidel has done a great job shepherding the revolution into this new exciting stage and now we look forward to a new generation of leadership.
