GMR: Rape culture and Cornell’s irresponsibility

Content warning: This episode discusses sexual violence.

A civil lawsuit alleges a former Cornell student, identified as Jane Doe, was drugged and assaulted by seven Chi Phi fraternity members in October 2024. The DA, who originally declined to bring charges, has reopened the investigation, and the state attorney general is reviewing Cornell’s response. The men involved have not been criminally charged.

The case raises larger questions about justice for survivors and accountability for those in power. It reached the national spotlight only after student reporters at Cornell dug into it. But shouldn’t that have been the job of campus police and prosecutors?

Sexual violence is shaped by who holds power, who is believed, and which institutions are built to protect themselves. How does the law help or hurt survivors? What would real accountability look like for the accused, for the university, and for the systems that decide whose complaints are taken seriously?

The Communist Party USA is a revolutionary working-class political party founded in 1919 in Chicago, IL. The Communist Party stands for the interests of the American working class and the American people. It stands for our interests in both the present and the future. Solidarity with workers of other countries is also part of our work. We work in coalition with the labor movement, the peace movement, the student movement, organizations fighting for equality and social justice, the environmental movement, immigrants rights groups and the health care for all campaign. But to win a better life for working families, we believe that we must go further. We believe that the American people can replace capitalism with a system that puts people before profit — socialism. We are rooted in our country's revolutionary history and its struggles for democracy. We call for "Bill of Rights" socialism, guaranteeing full individual freedoms.
