Call to Action
If ever there was a time for working-class people of all backgrounds to come together in common defense of basic human needs, dignity and rights that time is now.
The vicious attacks from the White House on Congresspersons of color, many women, hearken back 140 years ago to the attacks on African American elected officials during Reconstruction. The result was a devastating setback to democracy and perpetuation of institutionalized racism in our country.
The disregard and abuse and targeting women members of Congress is part and parcel of the single minded drive by this administration to dismantle all social programs won since the New Deal, from food stamps to Social Security, and continue the grand theft enriching the top .1% in our country.
It is part and parcel of the concerted attempt to destroy unions that have led the way for living wages, safe working conditions and secure jobs for working people, and for the election of those who fight for these rights.
It is part and parcel of the unacceptable divide and conquer tactics which have given a green light to white supremacist terror in our country, and to McCarthyite red baiting.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY); Rep. Ayanna Pressley (MA); Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN); and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI) as well as Rep. Elijah Cummings (MD) enjoy wide and strong support from the voters who elected them. An attack on them is an attack on all of their constituents and on all who uphold democracy.
We stand with these outstanding elected officials, and reject the tactics and policies coming from the Trump administration. We applaud their defiance of racism and their focus on addressing the issues of the people.
We commit to help organize a massive vote throughout our country that rejects these tactics and policies in 2020 and fights to expand democracy and advance the standard of living of the people.
It will take a broad, united front to overcome. It can and must be done.
