2020 was a historic year with many unique challenges and difficulties faced by all countries across the world. The most significant of these challenges is, without a doubt, the COVID-19 global pandemic. Across the globe, millions have been infected and hundreds of thousands have died. One country that stands out from much of the rest of the world is the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR), led by the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP).
Despite a number of disadvantages, such as a border near the epicenter of the pandemic and limited resources, the LPRP made it a priority to put the safety of their country’s citizens and residents above all other factors. The results speak for themselves. As of the start of 2021, one year into the pandemic, Laos has experienced fewer than 50 infections of the COCID-19 virus and, more impressively, has not suffered a single fatality related to the pandemic. The people of the world can look to Laos as an example of what is possible when a government puts the lives and health of its people above all other concerns.
We in the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) are also extremely grateful for the LPRP’s continued commitment to internationalism and solidarity. As we in the United States continue to fight the forces of reaction, we are encouraged by the LPRP’s message of solidarity as written in the Party’s recent statement to the International Movement of Communist and Workers Parties:
It is now more important than ever that the communist and workers’ parties, the Left and progressive movements must be resolutely steadfast, mobilize forces, and strengthen their solidarity, coordinate their activities and actions, and mutually exchange lessons in order to further enhance international cooperation in a new normal way.
This message echoes our own Party’s strategy of building a broad coalition to fight the forces of reaction and fascism.
All members of the CPUSA stand in solidarity with our comrades in the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party as we enter a new year and they prepare for their Party’s 11th National Congress. We look forward to a future working together in solidarity to build socialism and a better world.
Long live communist internationalism!
