Paul Robeson is a towering figure in the cultural, intellectual, and political life of the 20th century.  Football star, acclaimed singer, and valedictorian of his class at Rutgers, he played professional football while studying law at Columbia and pursuing singing and acting opportunities in Harlem.  Undaunted racial oppression and political persecution, Robeson won international acclaim as a singer and actor, as well as for his tireless activism for peace, equality, democracy, and socialism.
