Black August began as a commemoration of Black political prisoners and freedom fighters, a way to uplift and advance the struggle against the murderous violence of anti-Black racism. Today, we face an administration that has made racist state violence central to its political identity. But we also see a growing grassroots movement in opposition, including against ICE and against MAGA’s civil rights counter-revolution. In this context, Black August calls on us to remember that the Trump administration and its tactics did not emerge from a historical vacuum, but from a long history of white supremacist terror in the service of capital. This week on GMR, we’ll talk about state violence, the Black freedom struggle, and the role of the multiracial working class in fighting racism.
