Today we welcome to the show historian and political theorist Steve Ellner, retired professor at Venezuela’s Universidad de Oriente and associate managing editor of Latin American Perspectives.
The Trump administration opened the New Year by bombing Venezuela and kidnapping President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, who are now imprisoned in the United States. Since that attack, the United States has announced its intention to run Venezuela, and the Trump administration has released a plan to seize and sell Venezuela’s oil, deposit the revenue in U.S. banks, and use the funds as leverage to force the people of Venezuela into compliance with Wall Street’s demands. As Trump, Rubio, and others have made clear, this is part of an attempt to shatter the Bolivarian revolution, cripple Cuba, and bring the entire hemisphere under the direct, military domination of the United States. But has U.S. imperialism overplayed its hand? And what role can the peoples’ movements in the United States play in stopping it? Join us for a discussion of imperialism, resistance, and solidarity!
