The Central New Jersey club is active in several ad hoc campaigns and protests, which have been organized by Working Families New Jersey and individuals of the growing progressive community in New Brunswick. Examples are growing efforts to advocate for Medicare for All that including students and educators from Rutgers University, disability rights organizations, and many others.
Club members also supported immigrants in their struggles against discrimination as well as deportation. This effort focused on an effort to secure a commitment from city government to prohibit local law enforcement from aiding and abetting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). There is an ongoing effort to establish New Brunswick as a sanctuary city, led by young women and men who were active in the Occupy Movement as well as the Bernie Sanders campaign. This has gotten some support in the City Council, but fell short other than some well meaning statements.
Our focus in 2018 is going to be in the electoral arena, organizing to defeat right-wing Republicans in Congress like Rep. Leonard Lance and Rep. Tom MacArthur.
Our club has grown in the past two years, and is making party building a key priority, with a goal of doubling our membership in 2018.
The club meets monthly. Political education is an important element of our meeting, and our discussions have included articles from People’s World (all club members receive the pdf version for distribution), reports from the party’s national leadership, as well as matters of interest to members. The party’s recent national conference on misogyny and male supremacy will be the subject of our upcoming educational, and this will serve as a catalyst for our club’s plan of work around the points that emerged from the conference.
While some of our members are active as individuals on Twitter and Facebook, we do not yet have a club-based page. We can, however, be reached by email at the following address: cpnjmembership@gmail.com.
