HA NOI Nong Duc Manh, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, welcomed the leader of the US Communist Party in Ha Noi yesterday, discussing ways for the Vietnamese and American parties to promote bilateral relations.
Manh told the visiting president of the American Communist Party, Sam Webb, that co-operation between the two parties, nations and peoples would develop further in the future.
Webb expressed his delight at paying his first-ever visit to Viet Nam, a nation of heroic people, a lucid Party and of the dear late President Ho Chi Minh.
He congratulated the Vietnamese people and the Party for great achievements during the 20 years of doi moi (renewal). He also expressed his great impression of the excited environment and optimistic spirit of the Vietnamese people and of the countrys rapid and dynamic economic development.
Webb believed that the building of a socialist society of the Vietnamese people under the correct direction of the Communist Party of Viet Nam would be a success and its experience in the cause would be important lessons internationally for forces striving for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.
He said his party would lead the way to unite the American people to support the Vietnamese people and the bilateral friendship of the two countries and peoples, and the co-operation of the two governments.
Webb said he would urge the US government to take responsibility for the consequences of the war it fought here 30 years ago.
Manh expressed appreciation for the friendship and valuable support of the American people for the Vietnamese people during their fight to liberate the country and to build the nation today.
He informed Webb of the continued process of industrialisation and modernisation aimed at taking the country off the list of underdeveloped nations and making it a modern, industrial nation by 2020.
Manh told his counterpart of the consistent policy of openness in foreign affairs. He hoped the relationship with the American people would be built on the basis of peace, stability, equality, mutual benefit, mutual respect and non-interference.
During the time in Viet Nam, Webb and his delegation visited the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, and did some sightseeing in Ha Noi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and HCM City. VNS.
