The Communist Party USA welcomes the decisive repudiation of President Donald Trump and MAGA’s racist, reactionary and extreme-right policies in the 2026 midterm elections. A people’s movement — a left-center coalition of organized labor, oppressed communities, Black and Latino people, faith communities, and women — won control of both the U.S. House and Senate using the Democratic Party vehicle. The Republican-to-Democratic shift across the country, including in previously “red” states, shows that voters rejected reaction, division, and repression.
“This result was not simply handed to the people, it had to be fought for and defended,” said Joelle Fishman, chair of the CPUSA Political Action Commission. The Trump administration worked to narrow the electorate and shape the outcome through voter suppression, attacks on mail-in ballots, subjecting immigrants and oppressed people to harassment and intimidation, and gerrymandering.
“We reject the racist and repressive project promoted by MAGA which aimed to divide people by race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or religion,” CPUSA co-chair Rossana Cambron said.
“Trump’s anti-communist attacks failed and voters were not swayed,” CPUSA co-chair Joe Sims said. The housing crisis, price gouging, and war-mongering are driven by “capitalism and the pursuit of maximum profit,” which Sims called the “greatest threat” to the country.
Rising gas prices, grocery costs, and healthcare expenses weighed heavily on voters. The people demanded action on working-class issues: end the criminal U.S. war on Iran, lower gas and grocery prices, address the housing crisis, secure trade union rights, and stop monopoly price gouging. People must see concrete change or their anger will be felt in the 2028 elections.
The fascist onslaught has been blunted for now. How the left-center people’s coalition defends the results until new members are seated will matter. If Trump escalates — by further unleashing ICE or intensifying the war against Iran — the people must respond with collective, organized demands of their own. The fight continues, in the U.S. and worldwide.
These results do not resolve the root causes that allowed Trumpism to rise: glaring inequality, precarious work, and the erosion of democratic rights that characterize the capitalist system. The mandate to the new Congress is clear: break with a status quo that has too long served the billionaire class.
“Meet the demands of the people, not the billionaires,” Fishman declared.
Systemic change — socialism — is the only way to fully resolve the problems facing the working class and oppressed. Never backward, always forward. For people and the planet before profits.
