Proposed Resolution: Ukraine, Eastern Europe & NATO

WHEREAS

recent events in Ukraine have led to a violent and undemocratic situation in which numerous persons have been killed and injured and valuable public property destroyed, while threats of civil and regional war have arisen, and

WHEREAS

the overthrow of the corrupt, but legally elected government of Victor Yanukovych of Ukraine in February has brought into the new government extreme right elements including fascists, neo-Nazis and nationalist extremists who show hostility to Ukraine’s communist, Jewish and Russian-speaking citizens, and

WHEREAS

the governments of the United States of America and certain European countries have contributed to the dangerous situation by their uncritical material and moral support for the regime in Kiev which includes these far-right elements, and

WHEREAS

U.S. policy in the region includes pressure on Ukraine to accept entanglement with neo-liberal trade arrangements which have spelled disaster for other poor countries in the region, including Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland etc, and

WHEREAS

the United States and its allies have been aggressively and provocatively pushing the activities of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) right up to the borders of the Russian Republic, in contravention of international agreements, and

WHEREAS

The Communist Party of the Ukraine, which has put forward a program for preserving Ukraine’s unity while protecting the rights of all its citizens, especially its workers, faces violent repression and a possible legal ban instigated by the fascist elements,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED

that the 30th National Convention of the Communist Party USA calls for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Ukraine, based on democracy, freedom for minorities and respect for human and political rights, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED

that the 30th National Convention of the Communist Party USA deplores the involvement of U.S. officials and politicians in actions that have strengthened the ultra-right in Ukraine, weakened Ukraine’s institutions and created dangers of civil and regional war, and calls for these actions to stop, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED

that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s expansion in Europe and elsewhere must be stopped as a first step in abolishing it entirely, and

FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED

that party clubs, districts and members actively strive to implement this resolution.
