On January 20, people around the country rallied in support of the 6,000 Amazon employees in Bessemer, Alabama, who are voting on whether to join the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union. CPUSA members joined the rallies and sent their photos.
Baltimore: A 15-car caravan left from the People’s Power Assembly in North Baltimore traveling 15 miles through the city to join a rally at the giant Amazon “Fullfillment Center” in Edgemere, MD, formerly the site of the Bethlehem Steel plant. One of the speakers was Sharon Black, a former Amazon worker, who, along with other former Amazon employees, has written a letter to Jeff Bezos, pointing out the “brutal warehouse conditions and the lack of safety and concern for workers who are risking their lives during the pandemic.”
“You made thirteen billion dollars in one day after the pandemic caused Amazon’s stock price to surge,” the letter states. “Win or lose, no one will forget this battle against workplace injustice. What will be remembered, Jeff Bezos, is your greed and callousness during this pandemic.”
Because of the bitter cold, the rally was shortened, but closed with a heated rendition of “Solidarity Forever.”
