Proposed Resolution: Against Keystone XL

Resolution submitted by the Minnesota/Dakotas District Convention, March 15, 2014

Whereas

the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom, Codepink, 350.org, CREDO, and countless other environmental and earth justice groups have consistently urged the President to reject the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline, and

whereas

President Obama has long had the facts to support rejection of the pipeline, and

whereas this pipeline is expected to carry 800,000 barrels per day and spew three times more climate pollution than conventional oil, making Keystone XL a disaster for the climate, as well as devastating the lives of Indigenous communities, farmers, and homes along the pipeline’s route, and

whereas

the unnecessarily large U.S. military budget eats up money that could go to developing green energy technology, which would create sustainable jobs, take our troops out of harm’s way, and protect the environment,

Therefore, be it resolved

that the President be urged to reject the Pipeline and concentrate efforts on the development of green energy technology for the sake of the planet and life on it. If the decision has already been made to proceed with the Pipeline,

be it resolved

that every possible action be taken to reverse this decision.
